The evolution of King Woman from a small solo project of singer Kristina Esfandiari to one of the most exciting young bands in doom metal has been one to watch. Esfandiari made her first impressions with “Dove / Fond Affections,” a single released through The Native Sound that would lay the foundation for her poignant combination of doom metal and shoegaze, creating an undeniable atmosphere that’s ever-exciting.
After years of working at her music, she enlisted members Colin Gallagher, Joey Raygoza and Peter Arensdorf to round out the lineup. The group made their debut together on the EP Doubt. Now, as a full band, King Woman would find their sound with huge, titanic guitar work, setting a thick stage for Esfandiari’s haunting voice to come across. In a mere four songs, the group brings to mind some of the genre’s best, the killer tones of the likes of Sleep and Down transmuted into their most beautiful form.
This year, the group made their newest statement with the full-length album Created in the Image of Suffering, released through Relapse Records. Produced by Jack Shirley, it shows an evolved state of the band, easily moving between crushing moments to tender breaks of delicate melodies. Esfandiari has total command over her voice and sound, able to form it however a song dictates, a haunting presence throughout the record. It’s proof they’re a band not to be underestimated, and have all the tools to become a fixture in the metal landscape.
