In This Moment, 2017 Loudwire Music Awards Performer
At times, heavy metal is best when it’s able to combine different elements into one succinct package. In recent memory, few bands have successfully melded a variety of styles like Los Angeles metal band In This Moment have. Led by singer Maria Brink, the band presents a live show full of twists and turns, soundtracked by heavy and fresh metal riffage.
Formed back in 2005 by Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth, In This Moment rose from the ashes of a previous band, and began gaining popularity through their DIY MySpace promotion and further drive. The group found themselves as one of metal’s most exciting young bands with the release of their debut album, Beautiful Tragedy. It put them in the spotlight, and earned them tours with the likes of Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie.
As albums would progress, so would the band’s sound. The band would eventually trade in breakdowns for a more diverse offering. 2012’s Blood came with significant lineup changes, challenging the band to fully write an enduring statement for the group. It spawned their iconic single “Whore,” as well as an introduction of electronic elements into their music. From then, electronics would come out in even more impressive forms with their album Black Widow, seeing the group write a disturbingly beautiful record with Maria Brink equal parts sexy and sinister.
Most recently, the group released their sixth full-length album, Ritual. It brought their music to a rawer place than the last few records, with Brink being influenced by her own family and experience in Salem, Mass. Her voice took on an atmospheric quality, blending in with the guitar work to become a truly haunting, beautiful thing, and able to go super fierce within a moment’s notice. It pays respect to their own influences, including a Phil Collins cover as well as featuring Judas Priest Halford on “Black Wedding,” an retooling of the Billy Idol classic “White Wedding.”
In This Moment have proven to be a band that expertly incorporates music and theatricality with the same level of care, making their music a multifaceted experience. Maria Brink stands as one of modern metal’s most dynamic lead singers, and helps lead the charge for an inclusive environment for metal.
