Halestorm, 2017 Loudwire Music Awards Performer

Halestorm

How do you beat a bully? You can always get physical — and sometimes get incarcerated. You can turn the other cheek — and let your self-esteem take the fatal blow. Or you can follow in the footsteps of Keystone State hard rock heavyweights Halestorm and turn abusive, inflammatory language on its head.

On their 2012 sophomore disc The Strange Case of… alone, frontwoman Lzzy Hale’s pen —and lungs — are mightier than any sword, from sorry-not-sorry counterpunches like “You Call Me a Bitch Like It’s a Bad Thing” and “Freak Like Me” to the Grammy-winning smash “Love Bites (So Do I).”

Halestorm’s latest studio album, 2015’s Into the Wild Life, is their highest-charting release to date, landing at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. The disc has yielded the No. 1 mainstream rock tracks “Apocalyptic” and “Amen,” not to mention the Top 10 hits “I am the Fire” and “Mayhem.”

The always-evolving quartet are built on the foundation of singer-guitarist Lzzy and sibling drummer Arejay Hale, who have been performing together since they were pre-teens. While Halestorm are currently working on their next opus, the band continues to live for the road, recently announcing the “Halloween Scream” fall 2017 trek with fellow Loudwire Music Awards performer Starset.

Meanwhile, Halestorm have shown their range as a band on their Reanimate EPs, which boast unique covers of songs ranging from Guns N’ Roses and Temple of the Dog to the Beatles and Lady Gaga. That thirst for versatility has proven unquenchable, as Lzzy and crew have kept busy between releases exposing live audiences to singular versions of Dolly Parton and Foo Fighters classics.

Whether you like it intense or introspective, Halestorm do both with aplomb. Planting just one flag on the rock and roll landscape is clearly not enough. The takeover isn’t just inevitable — it’s irresistible.
