Dave Mustaine, 2017 Loudwire Music Awards Performer
Few musicians will ever have the musical pedigree that Dave Mustaine does. After his departure from Metallica in the early ’80s, Mustaine would go on to front legendary thrash metal band Megadeth, one of the longest lasting bands in all of heavy metal.
Megadeth burst onto the scene with their debut album, Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good! The disc would offer a taste of what was to come, as the band was ready to unleash a slew of iconic albums.
On Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?, Mustaine’s guitar work pops and snaps throughout the album, crafting an adrenaline raising, fast-paced sonic narrative that sounded like the whole world was about to crash around the listener. They continued their dominance of heavy metal, later releasing other classics like Rust In Peace and continuing their legacy.
But Megadeth’s reign isn’t limited to the past. Last year, Megadeth released Dystopia, an album that showed the group’s continued dedication to push the boundaries of heavy metal. Mustaine’s voice sounded sage and focused, weaving to the prophecies of the Earth’s further decay. It was hailed as one of the band’s best, earning accolades in magazines and praise from their peers. Its biggest distinction however would come when it was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 59th annual Grammy Awards, and won the trophy. It was the cherry on top for one of the band’s most exciting albums to date.
Mustaine has become a fixture of heavy metal, remaining as one of the genre’s most lasting and iconic presences since stepping onto the scene in the early 80s. There’s a fearlessness in everything he approaches, defining an entire generation of thrash metal guitar playing, cementing his place as a true metal legend.
