Body Count, 2017 Loudwire Music Awards Performer

Body Count

Steeped in controversy from day one, Body Count have defied the odds for over 25 years to not only survive, but thrive as one of the most potent politically charged voices in metal.

Fronted by the O.G. hip-hop legend Ice-T, the fearless Los Angeles outfit achieved global notoriety in 1992 with the release of their self-titled debut album, an unapologetic, supercharged disc filled with poignant sociopolitical commentary. After proudly serving as the standard-bearer for freedom of speech in the waning years of the PMRC, it would’ve been easy for the band to eventually fade into obscurity, satisfied with one memorable pot-stirring. Lucky for us, they took the hard way.

Ice-T went on to an impressive acting career — from cutthroat urban dramas like New Jack City and Trespass to surprising comedic turns in the likes of CB4 and Tank Girl — and is perhaps best known for 17 memorable seasons as Sergeant Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on acclaimed procedural drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. But even well into his fourth decade of cultural prominence, he never lost his gift as a firebrand on the mic. Body Count have continued to assault the status quo over six full-lengths, breaking new ground with two ferocious comeback LPs following a brief sabbatical: 2014’s Manslaughter and this year’s Bloodlust.

Still boasting the talents of founding guitarist Ernie C. and sampler Sean E. Sean, Body Count remain a wellspring of jarring, rap-metal thunder, supplementing their infamy with head-turning videos for the thought-provoking “No Lives Matter,” the video game-inspired animated beatdown “The Ski Mask Way” and gore-soaked assault “Here I Go Again.” Always provocative and never more brutal, they show zero signs of retreat after a quarter-century on the front lines.
